This movie should have been made 15 years ago. There's a scene where Keanu says "He's tired" and somehow this summarizes what's been happening when Hollywood tries to reignite a spark that was once there. I went into this movie expecting an extension of Bogus Journey. Did it hit the mark? Not really. Did it capture the feel of the first two? Not really. Did it try to shove an agenda or cater to what society demands? Likely. You can tell how jumbled things are going to be in the first ten minutes when the events taking place pretty much cancel out the last 10 minutes of Bogus Journey. For this reason, the movie gets off on the wrong foot.
But here's the deal. I saw the first one when I was 11 at the movies in LA. Loved it and in a way it was nostalgia that drove me to stand in line at the drive in for 20 minutes, pay for entry, and invest my evening to the movie. Did I laugh? Absolutely. Out loud at times. The movie was extremely flawed, but I guess I didn't take it seriously. Movies don't reflect my life or affect it's direction. Whether the movie would have been awesome or not, it makes no difference. I'm glad Alex and Keanu lent themselves to revisit the characters, although I don't really feel that a follow up to Bogus Journey was necessary.
There is a sadness to this film, that in a lot of ways reflects a reality we don't want to face. getting old. The last 15 minutes and the after credits scene really drives this point home. Seeing the old versions of Bill & Ted is a reminder that Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey were a long time ago and like all good things. they eventually come to an end.
So if you overlook all the flaws, pc changes, or the fact that the film changes a lot of what 1 and 2 built, then you might actually enjoy it. I agree that this film took way to long to get made and perhaps for that reason, the expectations were high for a lot of fans. I won't discourage anyone from seeing it, since I think that anyone who watched 1 and 2 should watch it to see a new chapter in the life of Bill & Ted. The writer, producers and the actors fleshed out these characters and if they decided that it was best to tell the third chapter the way they did, then I am sure that they are happy with the result. I'm not the storyteller and therefore I have no say in what happens with the story or the characters, but I am glad that the creators decided to give us one more glimpse into their world.
It all makes sense in the end.
